Light up Lansing in Protest / Stop House Bill 5977 to preserve home rule for Cities and Townships

By Richard C. Clement

Jack Adams Ice Complex at Adams/Butzel Operating Hours:

Open Skating from 1p-9pm Tuesdays through Friday, Saturdays open 10a-6pm
Friday Night Party on Skates 7pm-9pm
Skating Lessons given on Tuesday from 6p-8p and Saturday 11a-1p

Coach Cynthia Wardlaw (far right)
The introduction of House Bill 5977 to stop cities from getting into community benefit agreements is morally reprehensible and irresponsible to the leadership and the Citizens of Detroit. A benefit of a Community Benefits Agreement between the City of Detroit and the Detroit Red Wings would look like this, supporting the Jack Adams / Ice Complex located at the Adams Butzel Recreation Center.   The Detroit Department of Recreation has one of the best public ice skating rinks in the area that exposes Detroit youth to a skill that will give them something to do and keep them healthy.  The Jack Adams Ice Arena Complex has a NHL size rink that is maintained by the City of Detroit.

Skating Lessons for Youth
One of the agreements between the Detroit Red Wings and the City of Detroit is to support activities that would uplift the youth and community. The coaches there are very good and take the time to work with the children on skating skills and learning the game of Hockey.   Currently there are 2 players who are currently in the NHL that came through the program.  Some kids end up playing in college and semi pro because they are that good.

Young Detroiters take to the rink!
Therefore it is our duty to demand of our leaders in Lansing to stop meddling in affairs that usurps a local City or Townships in Michigan.  You must call and email bomb the Michigan Legislature to voice your displeasure. When you send this email of protest, please place  HB5977 (OPPOSED) in the subject line.  For a  complete list of Michigan Legislators, please click here.

The integrity of local control must be recognized and respected.

Open Ice Skating 7 days a Week and Learn the game of Hockey in Detroit

By Richard C. Clement

Coach Cynthia Wardlaw (far right)
Instead of waiting in line at Campus Martius to Ice Skate, you can do the same thing on a much larger rink at the Jack Adams Butzel Ice Complex located at 10500 Lyndon Detroit MI 48238.  There is open skating from 1 to 9pm Tuesday through Friday and, 11am to 6pm on Saturday. The rink is a regulation National Hockey League size surface.  Every Tuesday from 6p-9pm and Saturdays from 11a-3pm, come and learn how to skate and, play the game of Ice Hockey. Boys and Girls ages 4 to 17, will get the opportunity to learn the game of Hockey from Jason Mc Crimmon and Cynthia Wardlaw.

Jason McCrimmon
Jason is a retired professional hockey player that played nine seasons of professional hockey and just loves to teach the game. He is a native Detroiter and one of many African Americans that played the game. (Click Here for Jason’s stats). Born and raised in Detroit, McCrimmon played youth hockey for the Detroit Rockies out of the Jack Adams Ice Arena. He then played Junior A hockey for Belle Tire Lightning of the Continental Elite Hockey League before going on to play NCAA Division III hockey at the University of Massachusetts-Boston. While there, McCrimmon was awarded ECAC East player of the week honors on one occasion, while majoring in business administration and minoring in sports marketing.  After college, McCrimmon played two years of professional hockey inEurope and was named captain of Hela-Kiekko in Finland. He also skated in the Central Hockey League and International Hockey League, ending his career last season after a stint with the Danbury Whalers of the Federal Hockey League.

Richard Clement and Jason McCrimmon
Stay tuned for the "Hockey in the Hood” tournament coming in February 2015 to be held at the complex. Teams of Boys and Girls from Washington DC, Buffalo NY, and Harlem NY will come to play in a tournament that will be a lot of fun to watch and support. This is a partnership between the Detroit Recreation Department, Ice Dreams Hockey Association and, USA Hockey

Cush Creates Commerce on Woodward Ave and Detroit City Airport

By Richard C. Clement

Air Force 3 - US Secretary of State
On October 21st, 2014 Councilman Cushingberry implemented a resolution authorizing an application for a Neighborhood Enterprise Zone Certificate for Lofts of Merchants Row. This structure is located at 1413 Woodward Avenue.  The structure is to be rehabilitated at an estimated cost of $188,095 per unit, creating 42 units of rental housing. This resolution is another example of giving back to the community and bringing in new residents to our city.

In other action from City Council, the Councilman has introduced a resolution authorizing a contract (#2896481 / 2014) to provide auditing services for Preparation of the City and Airport 2014 CAFR to Plante & Moran PLLP for $675,000(USD). This action is in line with an overall goal of reopening Detroit City Airport for commercial and private air service in the near future.

To bring Detroit back from the brink we must invest into the assets of the City like the Airport, instead of selling it off to a private company.  Working with Council member Scott Benson, there is enough room for an additional 2 runways of over 9000 feet long that will enable larger planes to land within the City of Detroit.

Driving to Flint to fly out of Bishop Airport to save money will be a thing of the past because, Detroit City Airport will be able to provide the same services and fly to more destinations than ever before.

Please stay tuned to City Council for additional good news from Detroit.

Rain Water Management will Save our Detroit Sewer System from being Overloaded

By Richard Clement

"Rain Water and Solar Power will create a lot of green jobs"
  - A District 2 resident daydreaming in Science Class at Mumford High School

Water Use is Critical
In the not too distant future, City of Detroit homeowners will be required to remove the downspout that connects gutters to the sewer line by law.  Failure to comply may result in a fine as a last resort measure. However there will be opportunity to come into compliance with a one-time credit of $100 on a residential water bill.  All of this is very preliminary and will be based on public input on how to help residents to comply with these necessary changes to their home.

Currently when a large amount of rain falls on the Southeastern Region (Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb counties) the rain water from homes combines with sewage and overflows the system. To reduce the volume of water going into the Sewer, citizens are encouraged disconnect their downspouts and redirect the water into rain barrels, and gardens.  For every square foot of your roof, equals 1 gallon of water. Doing this separates the rain water from the raw sewage system easing the load on the system.

As a part of Greening the Detroit neighborhoods, the Detroit Chapter of the Sierra Club(click here) is selling 55 gallon rain barrel kits made from bio-degradable plastic.  The water captured from a homeowner’s roof is collected into the barrels until filled. Some setups have TWO barrels because of their purpose for the water that is being collected.  An additional barrel can be connected by a 2 ft hose for overflow purposes.   Reports have it that these barrels fill quickly and people have used the water to wash their cars with.

Fire Up Detroit

When an ordinance is developed to compel change, great care and deference will be given to the citizens first. If you would like to have some input on how to compel residents to make the necessary changes, please share them with City Council and the Mayor’s office.

Obama Impeachment Hearings and Electorial College Changes are on the table in 2015. Vote Early!

by Friends of Cushingberry

"You must remember in November what a Lame Duck did in December - Vote Straight Democratic"
      - District 2 resident at the 1917 Bistro on Livernois Avenue of Fashion -

Mayor Duggan says:
Give Schauer the Power and,
Vote Straight "D" for prosperity!
Impeachment hearings for President Obama?  Changing the Electoral College in 2016 for the purpose of awarding a state to a candidate by US congressional districts instead of a statewide popular vote?  Under this plan, it would have been Presdent's McCain and Romney. This is in the plan when everyone stays home and does not vote.  If the GOP remains in charge of State Executive Offices, Water Authorities, Pension Boards, US House of Representatives, and US Senate, etc, the process of Government will come to a grinding halt.  Instead of allocating money for fixing and upgrading infrastructure assets like Roads, the Electrical Grid, Water and Sewers, money will be diverted for countless impeachment hearings. If the current leadership in Lansing is successful, the tax credit for healthcare will be eliminated. This means that your monthly premium will increase from $0.08 to over $400 per month.

By voting straight for Democratic, you will allow President Obama to continue to lower gas prices in the middle of the conflict with ISIL to defund their ability to pay for their weapons of mass destruction. You will allow the President to create jobs through investment into public projects to fix and build new transportation assets like bridges and regional rail. You will allow funding for projects like commercial air service at City Airport.  These and many other benefits are in jeopardy before the President leaves office on Friday, January 20th 2017 at 12:00pm.

If you don’t vote, come December the lame duck will get pumped up on Viagra and Steroids, and become a Mighty Duck. By changing the laws on a December morning in 2012 at 4:20am, additional right to work laws, emergency managers, and the elimination of early voting will become law. Prisoners will continue to be fed Maggots by private prison companies with no accountability and protection from prosecution. Roads like the Davidson Freeway Service Drive will continue to be a shining example of how not to maintain one. This road is very close to being un-drivable because of the large craters in the road.

Your vote counts and by being a registered voter, a citizen has the ability to change the law through a ballot initiative. When the Governor and the Legislature refuse to act in the interest of the people, registered voters can get enough valid signatures on an initiative petition to force a vote in the next upcoming election. If the voters approve in the majority, the petition becomes a law. Laws like a statewide flat rate insurance, 30 year road construction standards, and other initiatives can be successful through a ballot initiative.

To protect the law you must start voting from the bottom and get to the top. Judges to protect the law are very important, State Supreme Court candidates like Debra Thomas, Richard Bernstine, and Wayne County Probate Court Candidate Rohn Mitchell will make decisions that will protect the basic human dignity and rights of individuals who deserve fairness. Therefore it is your obligation and duty to register AND vote in this and every election early by absentee. Early voting starts on October 6th, 2014 and ends on Nov 3rd 4:30pm from 8am to 4pm at the Detroit Elections Bureau 2978 W. Grand Boulevard Detroit MI 48202 for a new direction, and protection for the people.

Taking Back Detroit One Law and Vote at a time. Removing the Mgr. of the Emergency Mgr.

by The Friends of George Cushingberry Jr.

Go Wings!
September 25, 2014 was a historic day for the City of Detroit.Starting with the ground breaking ceremonies for the new Detroit District, the news regarding the new Red Wings neighborhood development hosted by the Illich family will bring nothing but positive results for the entire tri-county region. Our friend George gave a positive and informative speech on the history of the Detroit District. He paid homage to pioneers like John Sinclair who helped revitalize historic structures like the Fox Theater and, how the once idle land will be transformed into a new business district with a user friendly, handicap accesible Hockey arena.

Vote to remove EM Kevyn Orr Result
9 Yes  0 No
Later that evening the leadership of the City of Detroit redesigned the contract of Emergency Manager Kevyn Orr to a special attorney in charge of bankruptcy. This will be his only responsibility as a contract employee of the City of Detroit. All management of City business is now in the hands of City Council and the Mayor’s office. The Police Department will be under an elected board of review as the Federal oversight has ended for the Detroit Police Department. This seven member board is composed of a representative from each district. This board will be responsible for all Detroit Police hiring, budgeting and, discipline issues.

Council President Jones and
Mayor Duggan sign Detroit's
Declaration of Independence
There is a saying that you should not hate the player but hate the game. Mr. Orr took the money and ran like the Road Runner saying beep, beep. He has indicated that he wants to return home to Washington DC with the family and that is awesome.  He will have the ability to work from home and move out of the Book Cadillac Hotel, saving the City a few dollars. Instead of hating on Mr. Orr, you want to give HIS boss Governor Rick Snyder an employee evaluation with your vote at the ballot box this October until November 4th.

Before you mark your ballot ask yourself these questions:
  • Did you approve the working instructions given to Mr. Orr to cut healthcare cost to retirees
  • Did you approve the working instructions given to Mr. Orr to tax pensions?
  • Did you approve of the position of the Emergency Manager being appointed AFTER you told the State of Michigan NO the first time?
  • Did you approve the Right to Work law?

You have the power and privilege to terminate the contract of the contractors who created this mess with your Vote.  This would be the current occupants of the Governors, Attorney General’s and, Secretary of States offices. With this change at the top, the people will have the ability to appoint sound leadership in all of the boards and authorities. Boards like Water Authorities and Belle Isle will be under new management with Mark Schauer, Mark Totten, and Godfrey Dillard as your Governor, Attorney General, and Secretary of State leading the way.

Therefore, please take the time to register and VOTE.  You have until October 4th to register to vote in the November 4th election. That means the following:
  • If you will be 18 years of age or older by November 4th, 2014 11:59pm
  • If you are NOT incarcerated at a jail or prison
  • If you have a Felony Record
You have the legal right to cast your vote on November 4th or, October if you vote early at Wayne County Community College East or West campus.

Saving Homes in Detroit with help from International, Federal, State and, Local Agencies

by The Friends of George Cushingberry

Public and private stakeholders and, elected officials met on Sept 4th in the Governor's Office to discuss management of the reversion of 20,000 properties by the Wayne County Treasurer, preparation for another 80,000 in 2015 and collaboration on "life quality policy solutions and metrics" in Detroit that align with global goals of the United Nations as part of a collaboration lead by Communities Without Boarders International

One of the primary reasons that people lose their home is that they are not paying the property tax on their primary residence. In this process the property is in the hands of the Wayne County Treasurer. When the taxes become due, if a homeowner does not pay the bill, their home remains property of the Wayne County Treasurer until the bill is paid or, the property gets transferred to the land bank.

A panel of experts composed of:
  • United Nations Economics Advisor Dr. Jeffery Sachs
  • Director of the Governor’s Office of Urban & Metropolitan Strategies, Harvey Hollins
  • Black Caucus Foundation Managing Director; Dr. KB Stallworth,
  • Members from the Michigan Housing State Development Authority,
  • Legislative Black Caucus,
  • City of Detroit
  • Wayne County Treasurer (click here for property tax payment info)

The goals of this panel were as follows:
  1. Recover and Collect delinquent taxes
  2. Prevent Evictions
  3. Provide leadership and assistance to help people keep their homes.
  4. Allowing property owners to make arrangements to pay taxes in arrears and become current.
  5. Helping old homeowners to keep their existing homes or providing opportunities to move in and fix one up.
This group engaged in a lively discussion regarding helping citizens keep their homes. The City of Detroit has been thorough tough times and is currently on the rebound to prosperity. Sadly some citizens are living paycheck to paycheck because of Job Loss and other unforeseen events that can’t be covered by insurance. Therefore you cannot throw them under the bus for something that is beyond their control.

As a part of a global neighborhood stabilization plan, the City of Detroit has been selected by the United Nations to be a catalyst for implementing sustainable life quality strategies. Some of the methods discussed were using holistic solutions before the year of 2020.  This effort encompasses the UN model of humanity where the access to clean water is essential to life. To maintain reliable water supply there must be collaboration of ideas from organizations like Government, Manufacturers, Builders, Universities, and society worldwide. The ability to manufacture products that do not add to the carbon footprint will be our answer to deal with the issues of worldwide climate change. For instance the creation of building materials for homes using agricultural resources like plants will save the environment and create lots of jobs with opportunities for growth.

An interesting law is called the Reversion Claim Clause where a person who purchases a private property will not be charged the back taxes that are owed. This and other programs like Hardest Hit Program from the Michigan Housing State Development Authority(Click here for MHSDA) that will allow a homeowner to apply for funds for the sole purpose of keeping them in their home. Home ownership is essential to a City that is in need of a renaissance and the authority has programs for a low income tax credit that help people to keep their home.

Another piece of information that came out of the meeting is the ability for a Detroit Resident to purchase an empty lot next to their property for $100. If a person goes to the website www.buildingdetroit.org they can go to the Wayne County Treasurer’s office and purchase the lot next to them and maintain it.

Councilman Cushingberry overwhelmingly supports the effort to keep people in their homes. Coleman Young always said that there is nothing better to keeping people in their homes like a good paying job. After leaving work, a person needs a place to lay their head and, there is nothing better than a home.

If we can be of any assistance please feel free to contact the office..

Restoring the Revenue: 2015 Detroit Fire Department Equipment Upgrade proposal.

By Richard Clement

"Improving Service with technology"

Obsolete "Code-Red" Laptop
Plans to upgrade Fire Department trucks will include the installation of flat screen monitors that will display information regarding the location of the fire with a backup printing system with streamlined information.  Currently firefighters have to rely on a message system that contains a tower and a printer that produces a run sheet. According to various Detroit Firefighters, the font size is hard to read at 4am, it has too much information and, important data is hard to find on the printout. The flat screen monitors would replace a non-functioning and costly Code Red system that was purchased from an outside vendor.

Information on the screen will give firefighters directions and, other information pertinent to the issue at hand.

Closed Laptop on Rig
The recommendation from the President Pro-Tem’s Firefighter task force is to, de-install the old equipment, place old equipment on a cart for donation, and replace with touch screen, flat screen monitors. If we can put flat screen monitors on motorcycles and, have smartphones that can display massive amounts of content,  then we can place touch screen monitors in the fire trucks and give better information at the same time. When the city gets from under the cloak of bankruptcy, this will be a priority project for improved safety and service to firefighters and the Citizens of Detroit.

Fixing Detroit Infrastructure with the help of FEMA. A Flood Silver Lining with Long Term Benefits

By The Friends of George Cushingberry  Jr.

"Help from Washington D.C. is on the way!" - President Obama

City of Detroit from Belle Isle
The Federal Emergency Management Agency will be visiting flood damage victims in the City of Detroit. To help expedite things, we recommend that you take photographs and video with your cameras, tablets, cell phone, of damage to property.  Keep these pictures for your records. Next step is to go online at www.fema.gov and apply for disaster relief. The last step is to send us the name of the insurance company and the amount of the claim if you were denied by your insurance provider.  Our office and City Ombudsman who will do a tabulation by company name and, amount of claim.

Steps:
1. Document damage with pictures and video
2. Apply for Disaster relief from www.fema.gov
3. If your private insurance claim is denied go to Step 4 otherwise go to Step 7.
4. Record the name of the insurance company and amount denied in a email and,
6. If you do not have email, fax or call the City  Council office with the information
7. End of process.

If your property is starting to develop black mold or other unhealthy activity due to the flood, these are some agencies that can offer assistance.

State Department of Human Services(click hereoffering assistance with completing applications for possible financial assistance and social services.
Detroit Buildings Safety, Engineering & Environmental Department(click here) offering tips on hiring contractors and information on obtaining permits, if required.
Detroit Department of Health & Wellness Promotion(click here) will advise citizens on health precautions to take.
Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (VOAD),
1. American Red Cross
2. Salvation Army offering services at their centers.

MI State Rep Leslie Love(D) Detroit
We are encouraging neighborhood block clubs to band together and demand infrastructure upgrades of the Water and Sewer systems in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties. This is a new and uncharted direction for the City when it comes to flooding and the truth about residents own insurance plans. City Charter Article 9 offers relief to residents with a City of Detroit rate for car insurance. Maybe the residents can demand and update to the charter regarding insurance rates and fair coverage to residents. The ultimate equalizer would have to come from the statehouse in Lansing regarding a statewide insurance rate for cars, rental property, and homes of Michigan citizens.

Riverside Park
For Detroit to prosper in the future, we need fairness and accountability in insurance rates.  The City Charter is designed to protect and serve the needs of Detroit residents and, the citizens deserve open disclosure of home and car owners polices from insurance companies. An additional City ordinance regarding the management of insurance companies within the city may be upcoming. If you support the ideas of: enforcing the City Charter regarding car insurance, updating the charter regarding home/rental coverage, and fixing the infrastructure, we strongly encourage you to contact the Mayor and City Council to express your ideas and, make it an action plan.

Councilman Cushingberry Supports The Re-Development of the Old Michigan State Fairgrounds.

By Richard C. Clement

Conceptual Design from the Magic Plus Group
Councilman Cushingberry supports the efforts of Mr. Beatty, Mr. Ferguson and, Mr. Johnson to create jobs and revitalize Detroit through the development of the State Fair Property.  Community Input Regarding the State Fair Project by the Magic Plus Group was taken on June 26th, 2014 at the Northwest Activities Center.  Suggestions from the community were collected on cards for review by everyone involved to be incorporated into the final plan.  The Magic plus group has an Amtrak station in the plans that will be a vast improvement over the current AMTRAK station in Midtown Detroit. Currently, the AMTRAK station in Midtown has NO parking available and is a total embarrassment to the City of Detroit.

Preliminary Design Plan

The meeting gave everyone time to present their ideas, like preserving something that was the old State Fair like the Band Shell.  The meeting allowed the leadership to decide what type of housing will be placed there.  The City of Detroit has lots of land and empty homes right now that need to be redeveloped and rehabilitated.  The REDICO/Magic Plus Group is responsible for only 157 acres of the City.

There is no monetary commitment from Michigan Department of Transportation and, the Regional Transportation Authority to enhance the current Transportation situation. This attitude will change when the AMTRAK part of the property is re-designed. This will force the enhancement and upgrade of the current bus and rail situation at the Fairgrounds.

A monetary commitment from the US Department of Transportation will foster the development of a regional transportation hub.  A rail system similar to the City of Miami Florida would tie in Amtrak, DDOT, SMART,  M1, M2, M8, M102, M3, and M5 on a regional rail system funded with Transportation revenue from creating and growing alternative fuel energy.  Solar Panels, Wind Turbines and, growing fuel like Industrial Hemp and other plants will redefine the energy needs for a region and a nation.

The Obama Administration has two years left to serve and can leave a lasting legacy at the old State Fair property with a construction project to assist in the re-development.  This is possible if the people vote at the ballot box to re-direct the leadership this August and November 2014 in Lansing, Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties. The RTA is an organization with NO funding or public financial support.  The alternate proposal by the META Tech Expo Group is based on the area being bigger than the size of Downtown Royal Oak Michigan.  Detroit is much larger than Royal Oak and, the size issue is a totally insignificant fact. The need for regional rail is clearly demonstrated when you drive the Lodge Northbound at 5:30pm Monday through Friday.  This is an issue that has to be addressed at a State and Federal level.

The next meeting regarding the State Fair Project will be posted in the near future.
